THE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY SCALE

ABOUT THE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY SCALE

From preliminary discussions in the Spring of 2006, the concept of the Pedestrian Safety Scale has begun to gain momentum. A basic industry framework and test protocol is being assembled for comment and development from professionals and interested parties prior to submission to state, federal, and national code authorities. In the impact charts below, the Pedestrian Safety Scale uses the speed and weight of an impacting vehicle as two variable functions for determining stopping power. For the current scale, an assumed weight of two vehicles are listed, 4,000 and 5,500 pounds. A qualified engineer or other specifying professional should review any assumptions, including those in this scale, before site construction begins.
